The Faces of 2009

Interesting project by designer Richard Holt. These are faces that made the news in 2009, made from the news of 2009. Taken from the Evening Standard’s headline board outside the tube station, which he diligently photographed every day for most of the last year.

Can you guess?

U&lc + Herb Lubalin

Saw this on notcot.org and was immediately thrown back to my typography class. It’s an old scanned copy of ITC type foundry’s ‘Upper and Lowercase’ Magazine. Beautiful logo by Herb Lubalin, whom I had to do a type study on.

To pay homage to his amazing talent, I repurposed the type-crowding he loved for his Avant Garde magazine cover and boldly colored it with red and green, the two colors he can’t differentiate. (Yup, he was color-blind!)

I started with a big stack of books that mentioned him and ended up with the utmost respect and a deep fondness for his style.

Check out the Lubalin Center at Cooper Union for more.

Tim Burton @ MoMA

Check out the Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA. It’s on until April 26.

Japan Top Video: White Box

Just to show you that Japan doesn’t only come out with creepy movies & crazy animes, check out this beautiful video that makes design look easy. It’s by Makoto Yabuki who takes origami principles beyond paper.

Japan Top Video: Fake It!

Check out this awesome “Fake It” music video from Denki Groove. Totally creepy in a suicidal cult way.

P.S. I secretly waited for one of them to accidentally nail the board or smack into each other in the water. That would’ve put some color into the monochromatic video. Yeah, I know that’s evil but it’s kinda fitting the mood of the video.
